Nurul Asikin Binti Roslan, a full-time graphic designer and multimedia instructor by profession, is an up-and-coming contemporary artist. Born in Labis Johor in 1988, she currently resides and works in Shah Alam, Selangor. The artist snagged the Most Promising Artist of the Year award, under the 2019 UOB Painting of the Year (Malaysia) banner for her painting entitled "Bunga Moyang". It can be discerned that Nurul Asikin's body of work is abstract expressionism, predominantly shining the light on the culture and customs of Malaysia's Indigenous Community, known as the Orang Asli.
Asikin’s artworks are inspired by Mah Meri ethnic group native to West Peninsular Malaysia and their culture. Featuring a round circular emblem and different motifs and colors within each painting, these paintings showcase her inspiration - Bunga Moyang. Bunga Moyang or ancestral flower, plays a huge role in the Mah Meri culture, and it’s weaved as part of the festivities they celebrate. Asikin employs the circle to depict the theme of togetherness and within, translate the Bunga Moyang print onto canvas. This is to illustrate the strength and integrity of the tribe’s spirit.
